Further along the coast you then come to the third city, Santander. A short distance along the coast you then find Bilbao the largest city of the Basque region and the hub of modern art. The crown jewel is San Sebastian with its mixture of elegant architecture, sandy beaches and fine dining. The Camino del Norte passes through some of the top cities to visit in Spain. Intersperse the ocean views with rambles through the countryside and forests, passing by small sleepy villages that cling to a bygone way of living a quiet and simple life. Breathe in the fresh sea air, stroll on sandy beaches or admire the view from a cliff top perch. This route is the ideal escape for nature lovers, who want to take some time to reflect away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Hugging the rugged Atlantic coastline, it takes pilgrims through some of Spain’s most lush regions – from the Basque country to Cantabria, Asturias and on to Galicia. You can book online or through your travel agency. There are plenty of flights throughout the day, and the flight has a duration of one hour. We recommend flying from Santiago to Madrid, which is the best and easiest option. You can join one of our add-on tours, stay in Santiago on your own, or leave on the last day of the tour. Transportation back to Madrid is NOT included. After: Our tour ends in Santiago de Compostela at around 5:00 pm on the last day. The train from Madrid to San Sebastián has a duration of about 5 to 6 hours. You can also take the train from many of Spain’s main cities, including Madrid. We recommend flying to San Sebastián from Madrid, which is a short one-hour flight. After the daily walk, and after we’ve all had lunch we will head back to the hotel where we can shower, freshen up and have a much-deserved rest.īefore and After fill Before: We meet in the city of San Sebastián on the first day. We have personally put some signals in places where some people take the wrong turn- so we make sure you're on the right path. If you do not want to keep walking for any reason, you can hop on the support vehicle at the next meeting point. We also offer assistance for any unexpected circumstances or simply to relieve muscular pain or cure blisters. There is no one you have to follow or walk with and we have meeting points along the way where our support vehicle will be waiting with snacks, fruit and water and to make sure everything is OK. In these last 100 km, we will walk each day where we left off the day before. The last 5 days are more rural and focused on walking the last 100 km. We hop ahead with our van to the next city and stage. The first 6 days will be smaller stages, so we have more time for sightseeing and enjoying the cities on the beautiful coast. You walk at your own pace along the stages we have selected.
